Props Are Side Bets — Until They Become the Main Strategy
For the first five years I bet on baseball, I treated player props as entertainment — a strikeout over here, a home run wager there, something to keep the middle innings interesting. Then I started tracking the results properly, and something unexpected emerged. My prop bets across multi-game series were returning better than my moneylines. Not because I am brilliant at picking strikeout totals, but because the series structure creates informational advantages that the prop market is slow to absorb.
MLB’s 162-game regular season produces 2,430 individual games, each one generating a fresh set of player prop markets. The volume is staggering, and bookmakers rely heavily on statistical models to set those lines. Those models are built on season-long samples. They know a pitcher averages 6.2 strikeouts per start. What they underweight is that this pitcher just faced the same lineup two days ago, that lineup made adjustments, and tonight’s at-bats will look different from the season average.
That gap between the model’s view and the series-aware bettor’s view is where prop value lives. It does not exist in every game or every market, but when it appears, it tends to be more exploitable than the main moneyline because the prop market attracts less sharp money and adjusts more slowly.
Strikeout and Outs-Recorded Props for Starting Pitchers
Two Octobers ago I tracked a specific situation: a starting pitcher facing the same opponent for the second time in a series. His Game 1 line was set at 6.5 strikeouts, and he delivered seven. For Game 5, the bookmaker set his line at 6.5 again, barely adjusted. He managed four. The lineup had seen his pitch mix, timed his fastball, and laid off the slider that had fooled them in Game 1. The model saw a 6.5-strikeout pitcher; the series saw a pitcher whose advantage had evaporated.
This is the core principle for pitcher props in a series: familiarity erodes strikeout rates. Hitters who see a pitcher for the second or third time in a short window make better contact, foul off more pitches, and chase fewer bad ones. The sabermetric framework supports this — the wOBA formula values each offensive outcome differently, with a single worth approximately 0.882 runs and a walk at 0.691, and both of those outcomes become more likely as batters adjust to a pitcher they have recently faced.
The practical application is straightforward. When a starting pitcher faces the same lineup for the second time in a series, I default to the under on his strikeout prop unless the line has already been adjusted downward by at least one full strikeout. If it has been adjusted, the value may already be priced in. If it has not, the market is offering you a bet on a number the series context has made stale.
Outs-recorded props follow similar logic but with an additional wrinkle: managers shorten leashes in postseason series. A starter who routinely pitches into the seventh inning during the regular season may get pulled after five in a playoff game if his pitch count climbs or if the manager wants to set up the bullpen for later games. The outs-recorded line often does not reflect this managerial conservatism, especially in early rounds when the stakes are high but the public attention is lower.
Hits, Home Runs and Bases: Batter Props Across a Series
Batter props are noisier than pitcher props — there is more variance in a single hitter’s game than in a starter’s full outing — but the series context still creates edges. The most reliable one I have found is the hits over for leadoff and number-two hitters facing a pitcher they have already seen in the series. These batters get the most plate appearances, so even a small increase in their per-at-bat contact rate translates into a meaningful boost in expected hits.
Home run props are a different animal entirely. The variance on any individual home run prop is enormous — even the best power hitters go deep in fewer than 10% of their games. I avoid single-game home run props in a series context because the sample is too small and the edge too thin to overcome the vig. Where home run props become interesting is in series-long accumulated markets, if your bookmaker offers them. A “total home runs in the series” over/under captures the aggregate effect of familiarity, bullpen fatigue, and lineup adjustments across multiple games, smoothing out the single-game variance that makes individual home run bets so unpredictable.
Total bases is the prop I have gravitated toward most in recent years. It combines hits, extra-base hits, and walks into a single number that is less volatile than home runs but more informative than a simple hit/no-hit bet. A hitter who is “seeing the ball well” against a particular pitcher — an observation you can make by watching at-bats in earlier series games — tends to accumulate total bases even when the home runs do not come.
Fatigue and Familiarity: How Props Shift from Game 1 to Game 5
The two forces that reshape prop value across a series work in opposite directions. Familiarity helps hitters and hurts pitchers, as I have described. Fatigue helps no one, but it affects different positions differently.
Starting pitchers face fatigue primarily through workload management. A starter who threw 110 pitches in Game 1 and returns on normal rest for Game 5 is physically fine, but his secondary pitches may lose a tick of sharpness. The data on this is clearer for breaking balls than for fastballs — a slider thrown in Game 5 after a heavy Game 1 workload shows slightly less horizontal movement on average. That reduction is small, but it compounds with the familiarity effect to make the pitcher meaningfully less effective the second time through a series.
Relievers face a more acute fatigue problem. A closer who pitches in Games 1, 2, and 3 of a series may be unavailable or diminished for Game 4. This creates an indirect prop effect: batter props for late-inning plate appearances become more attractive when the opposing team’s best relievers are gassed. If you know the closer threw 25 pitches last night and 18 the night before, the eighth and ninth innings of tonight’s game will feature weaker arms — and batter props are still priced as if the full bullpen hierarchy is intact.
I track two things across a series that directly inform my prop decisions: pitch counts for every reliever who appeared in the previous two games, and plate appearance outcomes for each hitter against the expected starter. Together, these give me a granular view of where the strikeout prop market and the batter prop market are likely to be mispriced. It is not a model in the formal sense — it is a checklist that takes twenty minutes to update before each game. But twenty minutes of preparation has been the difference between prop betting as entertainment and prop betting as a genuine edge.
